Actually, levitation is editable by SMB2D... you can control how long
each character can float. I'll repost something I did find on these
boards, though. Acmlm found out how to change the orientation of the
life bar. Here's how to do it. 

$7E7D: Pointer to tile table used for the life bar sprites, pointing to $7DFF

$7E66: Starting Y position (for first life unit), $30
$7E83: Starting X position, $10
$7E88: Sprite properties (palette, mirroring, etc.), $01
$7E93: Distance (Y) between each life unit, $10

Now if you put 00 at $7E85, and 03 at $7E8F (switching the $0200 and
$0203), the Y values will become X and the X values will become Y,
making the bar horizontal. 

To have it like in Megaman, I put F2 at $7E93 (up 14 pixels per unit), 02 at
$7E88, moved the bar to a new X and Y position, and changed the sprite tiles with
the life bar graphics from Megaman  (well, for my hack anyway, 02 might not be
the best palette to use).
